As a community we can face the climate and biodiversity emergencies with resilience, so we experiment with different ways of supporting each other. We work with local networks, distributed community and ephemeral communities, as well as with our own intentional community, using tools from social permaculture and sociocracy to facilitate participatory decision-making processes. We include non-human voices through tools from deep ecology and other practices.
The human community
Catalina has a small group of residents living here permanently. We’re using use tools from permaculture to design every aspect of the project and sociocratic tools for governance. Our community grows in winter as we welcome volunteers who come to us through European programmes or platforms like Workaway to help with work on the land during planting time.
The more-than-human world
We know we humans need all the help we can get to respond to the challenges of the climate and ecological emergency and create a regenerative future. Permaculture provides us with the perfect set of “glasses” through which to observe nature and co-design our response. We also use our intuition and imagination through tools from deep ecology, such as the Council of All Beings, to listen to the natural world and to tap into the agency of the wild, taking the wider community of living beings into account in all our decisions.
